"Collapse There are many health disparities in the LGBTQ community. These disparities come from legal factors, structural factors, social discrimination, and a lack of culturally competent health care (Ard and Makadon, n.d.). Members of this community such as couples in same sex marriages are less likely to have health insurance resulting in unmet health needs such as woman not receiving mammograms (Ard & Makadon, n.d.). This is due to decreased access to employer sponsored health insurance benefits for same sex marriage couples (Ard & Makadon, n.d.). One way to decrease these disparities is by making this community feel more welcome in the office such as by making intake forms more inclusive such as by always including sexual orientation and gender identity (Ard & Makadon, n.d.). During the exam, physicians should foster a welcoming environment by having non-judgmental conversation, avoiding assumptions, and wording their questions in a respectful way. For example, instead of asking if someone is married, rather ask do they have a partner(Ard & Makadon, n.d. ). Members of the LQBTQ community have a higher risk of violent victimization, medical mistreatment, and social isolation which leads to poor health.
