SAQ 1 Volunteer fitness. Fitter individuals will have lower RER values at equivalent work rates due to earlier mobilization of fat stores.

Part A From your knowledge of substrate utilisation, what does the volunteer's resting RER tell you about their fitness level?

Part B If you repeated the experiments with a fitter individual, predict what the RERs (and substrate utilisation) would look like for work rates of 125W and 275W. What rationale supports your predictions?

SAQ 2. Metabolic rate Mrs Fawlty is a 52-year old aspiring exercise blogger (weight: 68 kg; height: 155 cm). Use her data to answer the following questions.  express all your answers with correct units and TWO digits after the decimal place.

Part A. Basal metabolic rate (BMR) From Mrs Fawlty's details, estimate her BMR (kJ/min) using the following equation:

BMR (kJ/min)(women) = (0.0291 * Weight (kg)) + (0.0182 * Height (cm)) - (0.0145 * Age (yrs)) - 0.477

Part B. Resting metabolic rate (RMR) Mrs Fawlty's respiratory data at rest is VO2: 0.277 L/min; VCO2 0.218 L/min.  Show your calculations of RMR (kJ/min) using the following equation:

RMR (kJ/min) = (VO2 L/min * 16.49) + (VCO2 L/min * 4.64)

Part C. Compare BMR to RMR Using your answers for BMR and RMR, please explain what each value represents.  What might the volunteer have done prior to testing to make the RMR higher?

SAQ 3. Metabolism of lipid stores Mrs Fawlty is determined to prepare for a marathon.  After several months of training, she is fitter (resting VO2 = 0.304 L/min; VCO2 = 0.219 L/min; RMR = 6.03 kJ/min), but is stressed-out and lives on sugar-free peanut butter!  express all your numbers with correct units and TWO digits after the decimal place.

Part A A small jar of peanut butter has 175.18 grams of fat. Show your calculations for how many kJ of energy that equates to. (Hint: Fat stores 40.2 kJ/gram of energy)

Part B Show your calculations for Mrs Fawlty's fit RER at rest. What percentage of lipid she is metabolising?

Part C Using Mrs Fawlty's fit RMR, show your calculations for her fat-only metabolism. (Hint: only consider % lipid metabolised from part B)

Part D Using her fat-only RMR from part C, calculate how many minutes it will take for Mrs Fawlty to metabolise all 175.18 grams of fat in the jar of peanut butter? (Hint: Divide kJ by kJ/min for time)
