There are many complications from diabetes that an older adult patient might need to know about as well as all patients with diabetes. When a person has diabetes and it is not controlled, sugar crystals can move through your bloodstream and go to other organs causing damage. Examples of this are eye problems and kidney disease and increased risk of urinary tract infection. Diabetes can also cause numbness and tingling in extremities. This is called diabetic nephropathy. This can lead to wounds on your feet due to the loss of sensation. If a person with diabetes has wounds it will take longer to heal.
