My name is Constance and I'm a student and human services major at a Midwestern University. Usually I don't like history, but this chapter caught my attention when my teacher asked us to do a certain assignment where we think about the history of our country and the treatment of those that are the haves and the have not's. And so I talked to my dad and my grandfather and he told me about his father and here's what I found out. My great grandfather Eleska [phonetic] came to this country after World War I with his parents from Poland. He lived in Chicago in a Polish community. His father was a meat packer and his two younger brothers graduated from high school. My great grandfather and his older brother dropped out of high school during The Depression to take care of the family. His sister lived in the attic upstairs, but from the time of her birth she was unwell and was unable to communicate. My grandfather Garrick was born during The Great Depression. Since he was four he could always remember being hungry. He would wake up and stoke the fire to take care of three families and two businesses then he went to school. He supported Franklin Roosevelt and our family received some social support from the legislation that was discussed in our chapter. And Garrick also belonged to the Polish Welfare Association established to help Polish families in need. Garrick's oldest child worked at a CCC camp in Oakwood, Illinois. Garrick started receiving Social Security once he retired from his job at the steel mill. My father Joe was born in Chicago and he's lived in Chicago his whole life. He feels like he's lucky because he was able to retire early and receive a full pension and he's about to receive Social Security. His first born, my sister, Ellen is visually impaired. Although he had to fight for services for her sometimes based on the IDEA, she was able to complete high school and is now an accountant.
