Key Success Factors for Platforms

For the platform to fulfill its mission and strategic roles in the ecosystem, several critical factors need to be in place:

  • The platform must, above all else, be best in class in its expertise. Unless it is providing exceptional value and expertise in the resources it offers, it will not fulfill its promise to the teams to help them become successful in their domains. Without offering superior expertise, the cells might as well be on their own or find another source to fulfill their needs.
  • Part of providing world-class expertise is a thorough understanding of the needs of business teams and the ability to offer products and solutions that turbocharge their efforts. In a fast-paced, highly competitive world, an ill-fitting solution is no solution at all. You might as well offer mismatched shoes to Usain Bolt. He will kick them off and find another provider before he ever reaches the starting blocks.
  • The platform also needs to be responsive to internal customers instead of asking them to wait in line for their requests. Otherwise, the platform only impedes the cells' and allies' agility and innovation rather than empowering these groups.
  • Finally, the more that a platform can facilitate crossnetwork learning so that the cells hugely benefit from being in the same community, the more valuable the platform. Establishing common standards and protocols for information and resource sharing is
    important. Effective platforms also offer menus of choices, depending on the unique needs of the businesses, rather than recipes that everyone has to follow.
