CASE SCENARIO
Jane is 15 years old and is the eldest of 3 siblings (Sam aged 12, Jody aged 9, Amanda aged 7).
Jane often cooks a meal for the younger children when they come home from school and if she is home in the mornings she makes sure they have breakfast. Jane's parents both have dependency challenges. Her father works on a remote mine site on a FIFO roster - 3 weeks on, one week off. When he is home, he relaxes with friends and often binge drinks. Her mother injured her back badly last year in a car accident and is now addicted to painkillers. She sleeps a lot and often does not know where the children are or what they are doing. When home together, Jane's parents argue a lot and her father has hit her mother on more than one occasion.
Jane has been having unprotected sex with a number of different men for the past 18 months. She sneaks out of her parents' house at night to go to nightclubs, where she often gets drunk. Sometimes she asks men for money for sex. She has stopped attending school.
You are a community welfare worker who has been working with Jane on her issues for a while and one day she tells you that she likes you and wants your mobile phone number after hours, just in case she gets into trouble on the streets. She tells you that you are the only person that she trusts.
Jane also tells you that she has been approached by a talent scout who has told her that she has the potential to succeed as a dancer and has asked for photographs in revealing outfits for her portfolio. Jane is excited as she sees this as her answer to her problems of school attendance and her support for independent living. She asks you to help her with organising the photographs as quickly as possible.
