Kant and Nietzsche represent two basic positions in regard to values. For Kant (as for the American Founding Fathers), values are objective, meaning that they exist independently. Kant's categorical imperative is the law of action for all rational beings. This value cannot be mitigated - that is, this value is absolute, it applies no matter what. It is also universal - it applies to all rational beings. Nietzsche, on the other hand, thought that societies make up their values, and therefore can recreate them. However, Nietzsche was also aware, like Marx, that social forces, such as class competition, was the crucible in which competing values were refined.

Are there values that are objective and universal, that apply to everyone equally and always? Or are values relative and socially-determined? Give reasons for your position. Also, feel free to play devil's advocate, and argue for the position opposite to your own convictions - it's good practice.
