Question: Pick one of the five Thomas Ligotti short stories, and answer two of the following questions with reference to that story: Vastarien, The Dreaming in Nortown, The Sect of the Idiot, The Chymist, Nethescurial
1. Did you get the impression that there is any "lesson" to the story that Ligotti tells? For example, does it warn against embracing particular values, against living one's life in a particular way, or etc.? Or does it not really seem to have a lesson beyond "sometimes, really bad things happen to people regardless of whether they deserve it"?
2. Did any aspect of this story strike you as "problematic" regarding such issues as racism, colonialism, sexism, queerphobia, ableism, or other forms of xenophobia? Does the story give you the impression that Ligotti is simply portraying xenophobic dynamics that are part of human nature, or that he is justifying or promoting harmful xenophobic attitudes?
