Case Study: To create a portfolio system to use in the classroom and to evaluate your portfolio system.
Scenario:You are a teacher in a class of three-year-olds. You attended a professional development workshop on class portfolios over the summer and have decided to create a new portfolio system for the new year. You begin by thinking about which system you will use. You want to be sure to start the portfolios off on a good note, so for the first day, you consider whether you should have all children complete the same assignment for you to collect and put in their portfolios. You also consider how you can use technology to support gathering and storing materials for the portfolios.
Focus Assignment
1. Do a system to use in building portfolios throughout the year, describing what types of materials you will include, how you will gather the materials, and how you will store the portfolio for each student. Include two ways you will introduce the concept of portfolios to the families in your class. Your system should include a plan for how you will build a portfolio starting on the first day of class. Finally, include at least three strategies for how you will use technology to help gather and/or store materials for the portfolios.
Self-Evaluation
Question 1. For each element of your portfolio system: a. Explain how this element addresses the issues in the scenario. b. Give evidence from the chapter supporting this element (with citations).
Question 2. Describe and justify how your portfolio system would improve teaching and learn in the scenario.
