Question: Paul is assigned to lead a group project for class. One team member, Alex, has missed two of the first three meetings. When Paul meets with Alex to discuss this, he learns that Alex has a 3-year-old she is raising as a single mother. She is working full-time to put herself through school-and, on top of everything else, her boss recently changed her hours. Alex genuinely wants to contribute to the project but is struggling to juggle all of the competing demands in her life. Clearly stressed, she says, "It all works out fine if I just skip sleeping!"

"I can't imagine having to deal with all the stuff that you've got going on. And you know it's totally fine to be stressed, right?"

"You've got that right! You can't understand or imagine what I'm going through-and I doubt anyone in the group gets it, either."
