Essay on a Journalist's Decision on an Ethical Matte
Students will arrange to interview a journalist about the most difficult or troubling or interesting ethical dilemma the reporter or editor has encountered. The essay should be 700 to 900 words.
The essay should include:
(1) Background on the journalist and the news organization involved;
(2) details on the ethical dilemma and how it came about;
(3) information on what the decision was, how it was arrived at, and why it was considered the best option; and
(4) whether there was any fallout from the decision and what the reporter or editor thinks of the decision now.
The reporter or editor interviewed should have been working in journalism at least three years. He or she can be retired.
Spelling, punctuation, usage, grammar and capitalization are part of the evaluation.
Assignment Specifics:
1. Background on the journalist and the news organization involved
2. Details on the ethical dilemma the journalist faced and how it came about
3. Information on what decision was made in regards the dilemma; also, information on how the decision was arrived at, and why it was considered the best option
4. Information on whether there was any fallout from the decision and what the reporter or editor thinks of the decision now
5. Any words that are not your own must have quotation marks around them and be properly credited in the body of the essay and then further identified on a reference page; any words or ideas of another that you have paraphrased must be properly credited in the body of the essay and then further identified on a list of references.
6. Use correct grammar, spelling, capitalization and punctuation. Use APA style for a reference list. For providing credit in the body of the essay, use either APA style for in-text citations or use the style that you would use if writing a news article, where the appropriate attribution is part of a sentence or sentences. The uses of APA style are the only exceptions to Canadian Press style in this assignment.
