As per the law, it is not obligatory for any employee to join any union even though there is a union in the organization. But when we talk about the advantages of being the member of the union, there are many. For example, greater negotiation power, collective bargaining, greater chances of having the right of voting on a policy decision, protection against the management policies and so on.

It is advisable to join the union despite paying some due for the membership as overall gains from being the part of joining the union will be more than the fee paid for its membership and it will also create a good relationship with the union members which can help the employee when faced with the difficult situation on the job such as lay off.

Is there a down-side, other than the cost? Is that enough of a down-side? Would it depend upon your circumstances?
