The only child of Maria, named John, is very worried about the health of his mother, aged 75. There has been a gradual deterioration in Maria's memory over the past few months, to the point where she has forgotten about an appointment with her doctor and tripped in her kitchen on the rug when she stepped on it. There have been several times when Maria has expressed her desire to stay at home and never leave. John talks to his nurse, Veronica, about what he should do if his mother ever begins to suffer from dementia and as she ages and he also wants to be sure that he makes the right decisions in caring for her as she ages.

Veronica's admiration for John's concern is evident, especially considering that it comes from a place of love and care. A practical recommendation given by Veronica to John is to remove the throw rugs in Maria's house, and to make it more light-filled by improving the lighting. It is evident that Veronica supports John in his determination to do everything in his power to help Maria remain in her home for as long as possible. The alternative suggestion made by Veronica is that John also help Maria maintain a daily routine that includes reminders for her doctor's appointments and provide her with the opportunity to go with her.
