"According to Selingo, when it comes to career selection, I would Identify myself as a Wanderer. I was uncertain in a career path and have switched majors three times. I do associate this with my delay in finding my identity. After I became satisfied and identified my identity, it became clear what my true interests were and what I enjoyed doing. We identify our personality and our interests to then choose classes in college that we are interested in and a career path that follows our interests and abilities. People tend to lean towards jobs that interest them, even if that job means less pay (Kail & Cavanaugh, 2022).
Job satisfaction is based on multiple factors. Having an interest in your job and enjoying what you do contributes to overall satisfaction. Growth in the job also contributes to satisfaction. When a company allows room for growth, for example going from an entry level position to manager, job satisfaction increases. Another factor emerging is the employee-employer relationship. When employers are open to schedule flexibility and work-from-home options, employees find themselves enjoying their jobs more. Parents, for example, can find these options appealing. Depending on a person's goals and stage in life, the factors that contribute to their job satisfaction change as they age (Kail & Cavanaugh, 2022). For example, a single parent may need a job that allows them to work from home, but once the parent reaches an age when they no longer need to stay home with a child, their view on what makes their job satisfying may change.
Mentors are those who take an inexperienced person and train them for their current or future goals or career. In my current work as an animal hospital receptionist, my mentor became a coworker who not only taught me to do my current job well, but who also supports and guides me towards my future career in nursing. In this respect, she also became my coach. A coach is someone who does not train in a certain area, but who guides, motivates, and helps focus on future goals. My Coach who made the greatest impact on my career was my former employer and the doctor I worked under. He motivated me to take the next step in my nursing career. Without his help, I would not have had the courage to go back to college.
Taking time for self-care is key in avoiding alienation and burnout, especially in high-stress jobs (Kail and Cavanaugh, 2022). Taking time off to enjoy one's passions should be encouraged by the employer and the company. Personally, I enjoy crocheting during my time off, as well as painting. Both activities allow me to release frustration I may be feeling and enable me to feel content once again."
