Internal Consistency

As a new HR Manager, you decide there are some internal issues and want to conduct an organization-wide job analysis and job evaluation project in order to start building a more internally consistent pay structure. The current structure has hired many people over the course of 5 years; however, they have hired based on the current market price for the job without considering what others in the company are making. This led to similarly situated employees being paid widely different salaries depending on when they were hired. Supervisors complain about the inequities and turnover is becoming an issue.

Upon further review, you see that within the same jobs, the group of employees that are being paid less tend to be female. You bring this issue to your director and he is not excited about a job analysis or a job evaluation project to create a structured compensation system. He believes it will be too time consuming and will be inflexible and unresponsive to the market.

Discuss the following:

  1. What are the benefits of your suggested job analysis and job evaluation process?
  2. How will you convince your supervisor to support the project and which of his concerns can you dispel/how?
  3. What other recommendations would you give your supervisor to resolve the issues you have uncovered?
