Assessment item - Business requirements report

TASK
Read the DR Alarms case study in the Resources section of Interact 2 before attempting this assignment.
You are an ICT Cloud consultant and you have been approached by DR Alarms to advise them on how to improve their data centre and move into the Cloud. The Managing Director (MD) is still unsure that this is the best approach for his company as he feels that his company is "too small to be thinking about moving to the Cloud" and that any money should be spent on design, engineering and development rather than ICT. But both the Engineering manager and Sales Manager are both concerned that if the company's data centre isn't improved then the company will not be able to expand.
The company is in the process of gearing up for a major order for their new IoT devices and have realised that their ICT system is not up to the task of supporting this new product line and the level of interest that it is generating. The company is reluctant to put more capital into

ICT infrastructure as the MD, correctly, reasons that this capital will be needed to support sales, manufacturing and distribution. The MD has read that the company can set up ICT infrastructure on Amazon Web Services (AWS) for no capital cost and reasonable monthly payments for the use of their infrastructure. The DR Alarms MD is not entirely convinced that this is a valid approach as the company has always purchased and owned its own infrastrastructure so that it is not reliant on other organisations. But in the current circumstances, a Cloud approach now has to be investigated.

Task
The MD has asked you to prepare a report that discusses:
- Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages, other than cost, of moving the DR Alarms ICT infrastructure to the Cloud.
- Explain which of the Cloud Architectures that you think would be useful for DR Alarms to use as part of their Cloud infrastructure. This explanation should discuss:
- How the current DR Alarms infrastructure could be replicated or replaced in a Cloud deployment. This should include a diagram with a full description, and
- Which of the DR Alarms servers should be deployed using an IaaS model and which should be deployed using PaaS
- Which approach would you recommend to DR Alarms to improve the desktop experience for their staff. You have previously discussed using Amazon Workspaces to provide a full Windows desktop to all users, but the company has been discussing the possible use of Microsoft Office 365 on their existing desktops. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each of these approaches and which one would you recommend and why.
- The Engineering Manager wants to run an online forum/discussion board for their new IoT devices. He thinks that this will allow his team to quickly and easily learn of issues and problems that customers have with their IoT devices, and would also give them a place to discuss possible new developments. You think that this could well be best handled by the use of an Cloud Edge solution. What should be considered to develop this type of service, and what advantages and disadvantages would this give to DR Alarms?

Assessment item 3 - AWS implementation

Overview
This assessment item requires you to create a basic AWS site and produce a short instruction manual for some of the ICT staff of DR Alarms.
DR Alarms is starting to migrate some of its applications and services to a public cloud. You have been asked to help set up a basic AWS site that contains:
- A VPC with both public and private subnets,
- A Windows server in the private subnet.
- An RDS database instance on the Windows server,
- A WordPress instance on the Windows server that will hold installation and configuration details.

Task
- You are to create the following instances on AWS:
- Create both a Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) with both public and a private subnets on AWS for DR Alarms that has secure access for users (20 marks),
- Create a Windows Virtual Server within the DR Alarms private subnet. Set up access control for this server for two (2) users. (10 marks),
- Create an AWS RDS database instance on the DR Alarms Windows server. Set up access control for this database for two (2) users (10 marks),
- Create a WordPress instance on the DR Alarms Windows server. Set up access control for WordPress for two (2) users (10 marks),
- Create a website that is accessible on your public subnet to allow users to securely access the WordPress instance (10 marks)
- In tasks 1b, 1c, and 1d, you are to set up one (1) user with administrative access and one (1) user with non- administrative access.
- Create an instruction manual that:
- Describes all the steps that are required for DR Alarms users to access AWS

and create each of the instances listed in Q1a to Q1e above. This should Include screenshots of each step of the process, along with sufficient explanatory text to ensure that another user could follow the instructions without problems. (20 marks)
- Describes how you have secured the DR Alarms VPC, the public and private subnets, and the instances contained within the private subnet.
You will be given access to an AWS Classroom and an AWS Educate account. You will be able to access the AWS services that you need to create your site through the AWS classroom. AWS provides a series of tutorials that will help you to create the different instances that are required. It is highly recommended that you select and review these tutorials before commencing work on creating the site.

You are strongly advised to use the minimum size for your EC2 instance that you can in order to ensure that you do not run out of credit in AWS. We recommend that you use either the T2 or T3 Micro instance. You are also strongly advised to shut down your site if it is not being actively used in order to conserve your credit.

Report Format
You are to provide a written report with the following headings:
- VPC with public and private subnets
- Windows Virtual Server
- Database instance
- WordPress instance
- Security for Private VPC
Your report should describe all the steps that are required for DR Alarms users to access AWS and create each of the instances listed above. You should include screenshots of each step of the process, along with sufficient explanatory text to ensure that another user could follow the instructions without problems.

PRESENTATION

You are to provide a written report with the following headings:

- Windows Virtual Server
- Database instance
- WordPress instance

Assessment item 4 - Cloud Proposal and Design

You are an ICT Cloud consultant and you have been working with DR Alarms to advise them on how to improve their data centre and move into the Cloud. The Managing Director (MD) has finally agreed that that this is probably the best approach for his company. But he is quite concerned that the company will lose control of their resources as they move more of the company's data and services into the cloud. The company is in the process of gearing up for a major order for their new IoT devices and have realised that their ICT system is not up to the task of supporting this new product line, and the level of sales and interest that it is generating.
DR Alarms is considering the following strategic proposal:
• They plan to initially move all their Web Services into the Cloud in order to provide an

increased level of HA (High Availability) as well as a better degree of flexibility in supplying data to their customers and employees.
Their web services are running on the current Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers using Apache Tomcat
- They also plan to migrate their IoT design applications to the cloud in order to increase the application's flexibility and availability. The IoT design application suite will require:
a number of IaaS instances running Windows Server 2019
a number of PaaS instances for Microsoft SharePoint 2019 Enterprise
- The MD is particularly concerned about data sovereignty, especially for the IoT designs and the Intellectual Property (IP) that DR Alarms has in these designs. The MD wants to keep these data sets only in Australia and to ensure that they are securely protected.
DR Alarms is contemplating this strategy as a way to increase the company's flexibility and responsiveness. DR Alarms expects to achieve significant savings by migrating to a Cloud based ICT infrastructure. They appreciate that this would entail retraining for:
- Their existing ICT staff so that they can manage the new Cloud based infrastructure,
- Their existing general and design staff so that they can start to work using a more secure environment.

Tasks:
Your task is to prepare a report for DR Alarms that discusses the following:
- Describe the Cloud architectures you would employ to assist DR Alarms to move their existing web services to the Cloud?
- Describe the architecture(s) that you would use to deploy their web services, along with your reasons for deploying this architecture.
- Include a labeled diagram to show how your architecture would be deployed.
- Describe the benefits, critical points and issues that would be the likely result of the deployment of this architecture(s).
- Describe the major Information Security risks that you see associated with this new Cloud strategy. You should name and describe each risk that you identify, estimate its likelihood and impact and then describe a possible control for the risk. This should be presented in a tabular form.
- Describe the general Information Security steps and controls that you would recommend to DR Alarms. You will need to explain your reasons for recommending these particular security steps.
- What are the specific controls and steps you would recommend to protect the IoT design suite.
- What are the specific controls and steps you would recommend to achieve data sovereignty for the IoT data and IP.
- Discuss briefly what you would recommend should be included in DR Alarms' BCP as a result of their adoption of a Cloud approach. You will need to consider, as a minimum, the issues of application resilience, backup and disaster recovery in a Cloud environment.
