IT354C Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Management - Nanyang Polytechnic
Aim: This individual assignment aims to provide the learner with the knowledge of applying the knowledge learnt in Disaster Recover and Business Continuity Management (DRBCM) to develop a Business Continuity Plan for a fictitious organization.
Introduction
Pineapple Corp is a technology company that first developed mobile phones through its proprietary mobile OS. Against all odds, it managed to acquire 30% market share through an integrated eco-system that allows consumers to become connected ubiquitously through their high-powered mobile devices. In addition to hardware and software, Pineapple also provides online services, such as online cloud storage which integrates with their mobile devices to backup all data instantly so that users will not lose data even when their phones fail or get lost.
Its mobile hardware business is powered by strong relationships with manufacturers located in developing countries, which offer affordable labour costs, coupled with high automation. Pineapple has developed a series of partnerships with several manufacturers which produce and assemble the mobile phones. Pineapple focuses on the design, logistics, software and eco-system of the app store, which powers the user experience.
To power its electronic services, it is currently relying on its data centre located in Ayer Rajah ever since its inception. The servers have undergone several upgrades, the most recent one being about 1 year ago when they consolidated the machines using virtual machine technologies. They were able to encapsulate various services into separate VMs for easy management. VMs can be migrated across different physical machines without having to be shut down and additional VMs can be initialised during peak periods. SANs are used to facilitate this design in providing a common storage accessible by all the physical machines (which run the VMs). It is using the largest ISP in Singapore to supply its Internet connection.

Mobile Phone Business
It is estimated that there is about 1 month of inventory, given the average sales of the past 2 years. This gives some time for any alternative arrangements should any of the suppliers, for some reason, could not deliver the goods or services. Past experience has also demonstrated that consumers are willing to wait for up to 1 month for a product from Pineapple, beyond which the cancellations will start to rise.
App Store
The app store does not enjoy the kind of ‘lead time' as in the hardware business. Customers are constantly accessing, downloading and updating apps from the app store. Any downtime is going to be disruptive for the company's business. After much evaluation, the management has decided that a maximum of 1 hour is the time they can afford for any unexpected downtime. Currently, the company has established separate servers in various countries where the company's mobile phones are sold. All these are owned by the company.
Online Storage
The online storage service is like the app store, but less stringent on its availability as its effects may not be felt as keenly. Nevertheless, a maximum of 6 hours downtime is allowed. The service is hosted alongside the infrastructure that supports the app store.
Task
You are to develop a Business Continuity Plan for Pineapple Corp based on the following steps:

• Risk Assessment
• Business Continuity Plan
Business Impact Analysis
Perform a BIA, both qualitative and quantitative, using the information provided. Identify the key business processes and rank them in terms of their impact upon the company should these processes are interrupted.
Risk Assessment
Perform a risk assessment on the business. Identify 5 (FIVE) major threats that can affect at least one of the businesses and estimate the impact and probability. State any assumptions that you may have. This is the section where you can refer to various threat reports or analyses that you can find on the Internet.
Business Continuity Plan
Design a BCP to address the recovery of both the app store and online storage processes in the event of a disaster. In your plan, you can design it assuming that only that particular business process is disrupted. You should incorporate any technology or solutions that you come across in your research so as to satisfy the requirements of the BCP. For this exercise, you may ignore the cost of the solutions that you propose, although that is an important aspect in real life.
Your report should not exceed 2000 words.
