When reading attentively the paragraph, one finds that indeed the notes are referring to a Lean technique called value stream mapping. Is the process under review necessary/useful to achieve the goals of the organizations (customer satisfaction, profit, better quality, etc.) There is an interesting case study carefully explaining the different steps from a controlled situation to a desired simulated state suing lean methods and value stream mapping. If you look at the processes you use every day to complete your daily tasks, or on a weekly basis, how many processes do you think do not add value? Do you have control over them, meaning that could you have an influence to transform or simply remove non-value added steps in the process?"
