The Case:
As a consultant, you have interviewed a male HR manager of a mining services firm XYZ, that roughly employed 200 people based in Central Queensland. During the interview he mentions to you that "there was a very clear expression of 'traditional' thinking about what work men and women undertake." This was put down to being a result of the prevailing culture of the sector and the HR manager had been seeking to bring about some change.
As the HR Manager explained, "It's a very male-dominated industry - there's no doubt about that. Probably in the more technical roles there's been some growth with female population - engineers, geologists, surveying, environmental OH&S. But certainly, in the operator realm there are still not too many women operators"
"When I first came on board as HR Manager of XYZ, we needed to employ some Plant Operators, short-term for over a six-week period in a rush. Someone got the specs from the Plant manager - what they need to do (Job responsibilities), what they need to have (Competencies). The manager gave me the specs and I sent them out to a recruiting agency, who sent me back half a dozen CVs: three were female, three were male. After assessing the candidates, I picked the best ones - I think, it was two females and three males and when I provided the shortlisted candidates to the Operations Manager, and when he saw that two of them were females, he blew his stack and said "What do you think you're doing employing females for our site?" This job is not for women".
Read the following case and provide your response in terms of what measures should the HR manager take? He is aware of the Workplace Gender Equality Act 2012, but as a consultant YOU are required to advise him considering the implications for Recruitment & Selection on minimum six (6) issues that equal employment opportunity (EEO) program needs to examine, to adequately foster gender equality in this organisation. In addition, suggest one strategic approach to recruit women in a non- traditional role.
