You are not required to evaluate every single method.

a) Essentially, the coursework for this module requires you to critically appraise the work of others - mainly academic literature but may include industry/professional sources - related to a set of issues you identify within your chosen vocational and employment setting. These issues are worthy of further research that will generate analysis and interpretation of data, which will be communicated to relevant audiences (e.g. academia/industry).

b) Evaluate key issues relevant to data collection and sampling methods that could be used for further research into identified issues.

You work for an international airline (e.g. in marketing division). You choose to research the central issue of climate change. What are, say, 3 or 4 supporting issues associated with climate change and air travel?

1. Carbon footprints in the supply chain including aviation fuel.
2. Research and development into new (green) technologies
3. Financial strategy e.g. investment; operational costs; marketing
4. Customers' views / travel habits / acceptance of change

You now explore literature surrounding these issues and write a critical appraisal - essentially, a themed essay of about 2000-2250 words

Issues: validity and reliability of published research; normal science vs, post-normal science (i.e. politicisation of science); ontology: what is the reality of climate change?; elements of bias; climate change deniers.

2. You decide to conduct a survey of passengers. Issues: construction (e.g. wording, length) and distribution of questionnaire; ensuring validity and reliability of the questionnaire; sampling (e.g. non-probability vs. probability approach); research ethics.

Additionally, you will evaluate further key issues that apply, this time, to the possible data collection and sampling methods that could be used for further research.

Suggested approach:

It is suggested that you structure your work as follows:

A short introduction about your business/NFP group and the relevance of the issues identified.

Write a literature critique/review on the key issues identified, using mainly academic sources but to include, where relevant, industry/professional material (e.g. industry reports; government publications; technical reports). It is recommended you investigate 3-4 issues.

An evaluation (a form of assessment or weighing-up) of some of the likely data collection and sampling methods that could be used to further research these issues; in order to do this, you will need to be analytical which will involve consideration of some of the less appropriate methods so that you can justify your ideas persuasively. Please note: we are not expecting you to write out the pros and cons of each and every data collection and sampling method.

Finally, write a short conclusion that summarises the main outcomes of your findings.

Coursework format:

3,000-word written assignment - it is expected that the literature review will form the greater part of your work but you should allocate at least 500-750 words for the discussion of data collection and sampling.
