Question: The apparent stability of hegemonic mainstream Western Culture has been threatened by outside sources, especially Romanticism in its many forms. But there are also signs Western Culture is also collapsing from within. For example, anxiety and self-doubt, as expressed in nightmares and imaginings of "the return of the repressed," are recurrent in literature and philosophy. Is Western culture moving irreversibly towards its own self destruction?
