A 52 year old female cancer patient developed sepsis. A blood culture was ordered and the anaerobic bottle was positive at 48 hours. The aerobic bottle was negative. The anaeriobic bottle was subcultured. A Gram stain showed small Gram negative poorly staining pleomorphic cocco-bacilli. The CDC agar grew medium size white non hemolytic colonies after 72 hours. There was robust growth on KVLB & grey colonies with black precipitates surrounding the colonies on BBE. No growth

  1. Is this organism an anaerobe, aerobe, or facultative anaerobe?

A 16 year old female complained to his parents that her throat hurt and that she was really tired. The pediatrician ordered a throat culture and monospot. The monospot was positive. After 24 hours the culture grew mixed normal flora.

A sixty two year old stroke victim was ventilated in the ICU for two weeks. He developed a bacterial pneumonia. Gram stain of the mucus showed Gram negative bacilli. Growth on MacConkey aga was described as pink and mucoid.
