Consider the following objection to U5: Mill proposes that we frequently do not have to calculate the utilities of our alternatives before acting because we have already learned from past experience what these utilities are. Still, there is a huge problem with U5. U5 is false because we are unsure about, or don't know what, the utilities of our actions are in those many cases where we can't rely on past experience to inform us about the utility of an action. [An example: Suppose doctor Cookie injects Anna with a new vaccine for Covid-19. What would the utility be of Cookie's act: injecting Anna with the vaccine? Who knows!]
