What is the normal function of this gene in a cell?
What kind of cancer(s) is/are this gene associated with?
Slide 3: How does this gene cause cancer?
Is this gene a tumor-suppressor gene or a proto-oncogene? -Are there inherited variants of this gene that can lead to an increased chance of developing cancer? This is usually only for tumor-suppressor genes.
How does a mutation in the gene lead to cancer? Or to put it another way, what is or is not working when this gene is mutated that allows the cancer cells to grow and divide uncontrollably? Usually this has to do with a point in cell division (mitosis) that is not checked or controlled. But sometimes it may have to do with helping the cancer cells gain access to nutrients or avoid detection by the immune system.
Slide 4: Prevalence and Testing
How often is this gene found associated the type of cancer(s) you identified on slide 2?
Is there a test available for this gene? If there is, briefly describe how the test works.
Are there specific treatments targeted towards cancers with this genetic change? What are they?
