Personal Discussions will differ greatly from academic discussions or from academic assignments. In the later two cases, students are expected to use academic resources to substantiate learning. Personal Discussions, on the other hand, offer students an opportunity to explore and discuss new ideas with their peers. The materials we will cover are related to the course, but also draw in elements of cultural dynamics and intricacies of psychological nature. Obviously, Quality and Performance Improvement can be taught in a vacuum, as some programs do. In other words, just the specific dynamics can be taught. But, to more fully understand these dynamics, an understanding of both cultural and psychological dynamics must be clearly delineated and explored. That will be the focus of these Personal Discussions. As a side note, resources inclusion is not required. But, if you do bring one in, please cite and reference it. That said, this is your time to probe new ideas and integrate them into the realm of Quality and Performance Improvement.
Culture can influence behavior in myriad ways, as the Patch Adams Video suggests. But, it is not just the culture of an organization or a school as it was for Patch. We are each influenced by many cultural models, both historical and current. We are influence by the culture of our nationality, and even subsets of our nation. We are influenced by religious organizations, the school we attend, even the family culture in which we were raised. The "cultures" that we experienced and the ones that we are currently a part influence us in a multitude of ways every day. For this assignment, think of the cultures in which you belong (or have belonged) and expound upon what influence they have had (or continue to have) on your behavior. Then, use the following as your headings. Answer each question to the best of your ability drawing is ideas from Brene Brown, The Patch Adams movie, and other sources that speak to your situation. Use the following headings in your response to clearly delineate your answers.
---What culture will you explore today and how does it influence your behavior?
---Is there a similarity between your selected culture and Brown's message or Patch Adams (or something else)? If so, in what way (briefly)?
---What was the cultural message you received from the culture you selected? (e.g., do the right thing, the end justifies the means, the golden rule, watch out for number 1, etc...)? How has that message impacted you in your daily life?
