Assessment Task - Research proposal

A desire to ‘know' more, a passion for a field of study and the motivation to do something for the ‘greater  good' are important for researchers to enjoy and gain satisfaction from their work. Consider this scenario - Does something pique your interest? Can you see something that you can change? Is there a gap in the knowledge that you can fill? Can you identify an opportunity for research?

In Western countries it is not uncommon for people to die in an acute care setting. The provision of appropriate end of life care in this context is an ongoing challenge that is often situation dependant. Nurses speak of the importance in end of life care as being able to use the art and science of nursing to provide a good death. Caring for a dying patient is a complex role for a nurse. Some nurses are prepared for this role, others are not. Observing the vast differences in how your colleagues approach end of life care has you questioning how you will fulfil this form of nursing. Eager to ensure your practice would be informed, you locate the care of the dying clinical pathway adopted by your organisation that provides: an algorithm for decision making in diagnosing dying and the use of the
clinical pathway in the last hours or days of life; initial assessment; ongoing assessment; clinical events/variances; care after death and information for relatives (http:/www.health.qld.gov.au/caru/pathways/docs/care_pathway.pdf). This tool is of great comfort to you as it is a validated point of reference designed to enable the delivery of high quality care tailored to the patient's individual needs. Familiarising yourself with the pathway does, however, raise several questions regarding the role of the nurse in caring for the dying patient in an acute care setting. It seems to you that whilst the clinical pathway will guide and direct care, you are left searching for further information to inform your future end of life care practice that hasn't been captured in the pathway.

Can you articulate what these issues may be? Are you searching for something that the experiences of others may answer? How will you figure out what else you need to inform your approach to caregiving for the dying patient? Focus on one creating one question that you want to answer.

To understand the parameters of any research in this scenario, briefly consider how you will answer your research question and meet your aim by thinking about:

Who would the project involve?

How does it link with previous research?

Is it realistic?

How long will it take?

What resources do you need?

Could there potentially be harm caused to staff, consumers, carers or the institution?

What confidentiality considerations are there?
