Saxenda examined whether certain hospital workload variables were associated with monthly medication errors by nurses at a hospital in Toronto. Study data were obtained from hospital records over a 2-year period. Errors included omission of a scheduled medication, medication given at the wrong time or to the wrong patient, administration of the wrong medication or wrong dose, or medication repeated without a physician's order. Three workload factors-out of the 10 that were examined-were found to predict the risk of medication errors. Monthly errors increased with the total number of patient days per month and with the number of shifts per month worked by temporary nursing staff. Monthly errors decreased with the number of overtime shifts worked by permanent nursing staff.
