Directions: Areas over the research question and hypothesis. Answer each question thoroughly as it has 3 parts with many questions. Make it as descriptive as possible.
Research Question: Is the level of gang presence in a school associated with the level of mental health systems at the school exhibit?
Hypothesis: An increase in certain mental health symptoms, such as anxiety, depression and post traumatic stress disorder, may be linked to the presence of gangs in a school, according to some research (PTSD). Therefore, if the amount of mental health symptoms at a school is correlated with the amount of gang presence there, then schools with more gang presence will have more mental health symptoms among their students. Surveying students at schools with varying levels of gang activity and assessing the severity of their mental health symptoms could be used to test this hypothesis. If the theory is correct, interventions could be created to lessen the prevalence of gangs in schools and the symptoms that come with it for mental health. You might want to talk to the school administration about the policies and procedures for dealing with gangs if you are worried about the level of gang presence in your child's school. Asking the child about their school experiences and whether they have seen any gang-related activity or have personally experienced it. If so, seeking professional assistance if the child is displaying signs of mental illness.
Sampling
1. What is your unit of analysis? What sampling method will you use to gather elements?
2. What are the strengths and weaknesses of this sampling method
3. Will the results of your study be generalizable? What limitations are there on generalizability based on your sample?
Research Design
1. What research design will you use to answer your research question?
2. What threats to internal validity does your design rule out and why?
3. What threats to internal validity remain and why?
4. If you were to find a correlation between your independent and dependent variables, what rival hypotheses would you need to rule out before you would consider making a causal claim?
Ethical
1. How will you collect your data? What ethical considerations, such as informed consent and confidentiality, do you need to address in your data collection?
2. How would you do so?
3. Are there any other ethical issues with your research?
