Here is the scenario:
A company has overseas subcontractors doing work for them. Often they are criticized when young children, as young as 10-12 years old, have been found working in the subcontractor's facilities. The standard response is to investigate this. If confirmed, controls are put in place so it does not happen again. Upon research into this specific situation, it was learned that these young children are being paid the prevailing wage for that type of work which was light office work and perhaps on an occasion or two some very light assembly work. However, this wage is far less than what is paid for comparable work in the United States. What is overlooked is that these children are often the providers for their families. If they were not employed in this fashion, they would be digging through dumpsters looking for food for their families.
Is the decision to hire these young children ethical? Your discussion should look at all sides of this issue. Can you think of ways to present this as a positive action and if so explain what this would be?
