Topic - Social Construction of Terrorism
Social Construction of Terrorism: During the semester, we have discussed a number of different types of terrorism. Your final paper will focus on the responsibility of action in our society. Using the book They Thought They Were Free as the comparison for your paper, choose at least one (more events can be chosen) and discuss the concept of action against those in power. One criticism of the stories told in the book is that the individuals who were living in Nazi Germany during this time should be held responsible for the actions of those in power. They should have stood up against the power and by not doing so, should be held responsible for what transpired. With that being said, what responsibility do we in our society have to the actions taken by those in power and how does the powerful use the concept of terrorism to maintain their power?
Part One - Power and the creation of inaction in Nazi Germany
The first part of your paper should concentrate on Nazi Germany and address one or more of the following questions:
How did the Nazi's create a community?
How did that community create the holocaust?
Is that community responsible for the holocaust?
Part Two - Power and the creation of terrorism
The second part of your paper should address one or more of the following questions:
How did Nazi Germany and how does our government control information to create an unsupportive atmosphere for those who question those in power?
Is the criminal justice system used against activists to decrease activism in our society?
What responsibility do we have to act? How does our government create terrorism? How did the Nazi's create terrorism? How does our government increase terrorism?
What event in our society today could you argue that our citizens are responsible for their inaction? Why don't they act?
The final paper should be between 3-5 single spaced pages written in 12 font, Times New Roman. Other than the textbook, you should have at least 3 academic sources cited in your writing.
