Assignment - Communications Social Media Relevance in Peoples Lives Discussion
1. Delete all social media applications off of your devices for three days. (If you do not want to delete the physical application, you can simply completely ignore it for three days and turn off all notifications from it.)
On your laptop/computer, use an extension such as Block Site in order to block sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and all other social media that you use. For these two, attempt to move all necessary communications to text or phone calls only. (The only exception allowed is to check your social media sites for a maximum of five minutes each day for essentials (club organization and meeting notifications, job postings, etc.). Note and discuss any use you made of this exception).
Over the course of these three days, keep a journal tracking the way that disconnecting from social media makes you feel (at least one paragraph per day). Do you have an increased or decreased sense of FOMO (fear of missing out)? How does your screen time change overall? Do you feel more productive? How do you fill in the spare time that you would've used social media on? Do you feel like you're missing out on connections with your friends? Summarize your overall experience in a paragraph.
2. At the end of the three days, read the optional article - No More FOMO: Limiting Social Media Decreases Loneliness and Depression by Melissa G. Hunt, Rachel Marx, Courtney Lipson and Jordyn Young.
Answer these final questions: Is social media a necessity in your life? Why or why not? Moving forward, do you see yourself disconnecting from social media more often? Why or why not? How does your experience relate to the ideas from the article?
