Assignment:
1. Review the information in the link titled "The Future of Religion."
2. Review the information in the link titled "Is Religious Freedom Necessary for Other Freedoms to Flourish?".
3. You will respond to a series of questions, based on the information in these two links. Your response should answer the following questions, which are based on the questions in "Is Religious Freedom Necessary for Other Freedoms to Flourish?":
1. Thinking of Martin Luther's The Christian in Society and Inglehart & Norris' The Sacred & the Secular, what is the relationship between religion and political society? For our purposes, we will reference all/any religions here, not just Christianity.
2. John Calvin mentions that society owes duties to the religious person that exists in society, but does not give details on his ideas. What duties would you want to see political society perform in service of the religious person that exists in society?
3. If a political society aims to protect the religious person in society, is that the same as promoting religious freedom? (see Farr's "Is Religious Freedom Necessary for Other Freedoms to Flourish?)
4. Do you believe that the political society in which you live works proactively to protect religious freedom? Give an example to support your answer. (see Farr's "Is Religious Freedom Necessary for Other Freedoms to Flourish?)
5. Is religious liberty related to other freedoms you experience in the society in which you currently live? Thinking of one example (e.g., the right to free speech), can the other freedom operate if your religious freedom is unduly restricted or denied? ((see Farr's "Is Religious Freedom Necessary for Other Freedoms to Flourish?)
6. Should religious freedom include the right to engage in public life, both in civil society and in political life? If yes, why? If no, why not? (see Farr's "Is Religious Freedom Necessary for Other Freedoms to Flourish?)
7. Should the society in which you currently live attempt to promote international religious freedom? Why? (see Farr's "Is Religious Freedom Necessary for Other Freedoms to Flourish? and Pew Research Center's The Future of World Religions: Population Growth Projections, 2010-2050).
Can you find the correlation between the theory of existential security and the predictions about how religion may change in the future? (see Farr's "Is Religious Freedom Necessary for Other Freedoms to Flourish? and Pew Research Center's The Future of World Religions: Population Growth Projections, 2010-2050)
