Assignment:
The institution of marriage is changing. In the US and Europe, fewer people get married, and those who do get married don't stay married half the time. On the other hand, same-gender marriage is the law of the land in increasing numbers of places.
Is marriage evolving? Is it becoming more flexible, more responses to people's needs? Or is it an outdated institution that needs to be junked? Is the queer critique of gay marriage, AKA marriage equality, that to embrace marriage is to assimilate to heteronormative standards, right?
Explain whether you think marriage is worth saving, and what should change in marriage practices and society more generally to make that happen, OR Explain why you think marriage can't or shouldn't be saved, but should just peter out.
Remember to take on intersectional considerations re phenomena such as gender, sexuality, class, race, religion (you don't have to cover everything, but at least some issues!) in your response.
