Assignment:

Aligned to the ratification of the US Constitution came the formation of two political factions (not officially political parties... until later): the Federalist and the Anti-Federalist. To garner support for their positions, the Federalists and Anti-Federalists each wrote a series of essays. These essays have stood the test of time, some more than others. Federalist No. 10 is one example of those that have endured.

For this Reflection Journal, read Federalist No. 10 and consider the following:

  • What was Madison conveying to a 1787 society and why was this important regarding the ratification of the US Constitution?
  • Is Madison's message relevant to today's society? How and why/why not?

Requirements and Expectations:

As you are creating your journal entry, make certain to utilize the following reflection types:

  • Action: consider your learning experience throughout this Lesson as well as your past understanding of American Government, American history, and the US Constitution.
  • Deliberative: think about multiple perspectives and events regarding the role of factions, special interest, and the size of the republic
  • Critical: indicate what changes, if any, are needed regarding Madison's position that aligns to contemporary society.
