In 2010 Arizona placed a ban on a popular Mexican-American ethnic studies program at Tucson Unified School District. The law prohibited courses that promoted resentment toward a race or a class of people or advocated ethnic solidarity instead of treating people as individuals. It banned courses designed primarily for students of a particular ethnic group. In 2017 U.S. District Judge Wallace Tashima found that the state enacted the ban with discriminatory intent and that evidence showed that defendants were pursuing these discriminatory ends in order to make political gains.
