Chris thinks that Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is the answer to all soft tissue problems. When Maya present with a soft tissue problem he tells her that's he needs MLD. Maya tells him that another friend told her that a different therapy would be much better. Chris is very defensive at this suggestion and reacts with, "Is your friend an RMT? How do they know that MLD is not the answer? I'm telling you that in my professional opinion MLD is the way to go and my opinion is based on research." He fails to tell her that the research he is referring to is his own work with his own clients.

Questions:

1. Is it ethical for Chris to trick Maya into receiving MLD?

2. Would it be ethical for him to trick her into receiving MLD if in fact valid research indicated that MLD was best for this kind of condition?

3. Is it ever appropriate for a therapist to trick or deceive a client for any reason.
