In preparation for the debate, read the following piece from The New York Times, Is Immigration really a problem in the U.S.? And the article from Time Magazine, 7 things that would fix immigration in the US.
As The New York Times article suggests: "After years of Congressional inaction on immigration, the issue has become the dominant topic in the Republican 2016 presidential campaign, with candidates continuing to call for border walls and mass deportation. But is unauthorized immigration as much of a problem for the United States as some claim? Are concerns justified or exaggerated?" With the 2024 presidential election approaching, has anything really changed since the publication of this article? John Austin and Steve Tobocman do not see much progress and propose 7 things that would fix immigration in the US. in this recent Time Magazine piece. Read the responses from the "debaters" in the New York Times article and the suggestions proposed in the Time article, and formulate a response based upon your assigned position.
Over the course of the week-long discussion, each team will debate the following statement:
Group A will argue that unauthorized immigration is a justified problem for the United States. Also, pick one of the 7 solutions proposed in the Time article and explain why you do NOT think this will help solve the problem of unauthorized immigration.
