Question - You will note as you read the textbook, that Freud believed that personality is formed early in life (basically birth to 5 or 6) and therefore most maladjustment stems from this period in life. In contrast, Erikson, noted 8 critical points of development in life that encompass the entire lifespan and is highly influenced by culture. So, Erikson saw a social, as well as biological piece, to development. Erikson also firmly believed that difficulties at one stage of development could be made up for by positive experiences at the next or later stages of development.
