Question: In the recent instructional modules covering autocratic political systems, I classify China during the Mao era as a totalitarian system, while the post-Mao China (1976-2012) moderated and became a more "garden variety" type of authoritarian system - still generally repressive toward influential political opponents, one-party/regime rule, no elections, but also allowing some civil society political activism, more private sector market economy and competition, collective rule by the Chinese Communist Party, etc..

Now, since taking over in 2012, China's current leader, Xi Jinping, is in the process of reversing all of that. Please read the following article (link below) from the Council on Foreign Relations and answer the following question: Based on our covering of authoritarian and totalitarian systems, is China's current authoritarian regime on the trajectory to go back to a new brand of totalitarianism? Citing the evidence provided in the article, why or why not?
