1. An employee was playing volleyball (outside of work) when s/he collided with another player, fell, and broke a foot. The employee, a member of management, was two hours late getting to work the next morning and had to miss a few mornings of work due to doctor appointments. Meetings have been rescheduled as necessary.

Is absenteeism an issue or not? Why do you think that? If absenteeism is an issue, what kind of costs does the company incur due to the absence?

2. Your company is experiencing unusually high absenteeism and turnover on the second shift of your three-shift operation. As the HR manager, you need to figure out why and then make a recommendation to other decision makers as to the appropriate response. What data will be useful to you? How will you use that data? Feel free to make some assumptions, just be sure to define what those assumptions are.

3. You screened resumes for the position of Accounting Clerk, chose the top three candidates to bring in for an interview, and then scheduled them all for an interview with the manager to whom they will report. The three candidates possessed many of the necessary knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics (KSAOs) required for the position. One, however, seemed to have the highest number of KSAOs of the three so s/he was hired. Six months after beginning employment, a new software program was installed. The accounting clerk received basic training on the new program two weeks before implementation. Six weeks later, the accounting clerk tendered his/her resignation.

Was the turnover controllable or uncontrollable, and why do you say that? Was the turnover functional or dysfunctional, and why do you say that? What data was available to you to assist in your analysis of this turnover situation?
