Lab - Haematology

Objectives:

• What proportion of total blood volume is occupied by erythrocytes (red blood cells; RBCs)?
• How many RBCs are there per unit blood volume?
• How much haemoglobin (Hb) is there per unit blood volume and per RBC?
• How large are RBCs?

1. Investigate variations in haematological parameters between mammals (dog) and fish

2. Need to become proficient at using spreadsheets (e.g., Excel) and statistical analysis

The focus of lab assignment is on the Abstract, Results and Discussion sections of a scientific manuscript.

Write everything in your own words. Include a title page for your report and use a format appropriate for publication in a scientific journal.

Assume that your experimental objective was to compare haematological parameters in mammals and fish. Write a stand-alone Abstract for the experiment that provides all the necessary information in a single page (double-spaced).

Summarize the collected lab observations and data from all groups (not just your own*) in a Results section. Remember that a Results section should include both a summary of the data (Tables and/or Figures) and some text that highlights the significant information gained from these data, without any interpretation as to its significance.

Write a short (2-3 pages, double-spaced) Discussion that interprets the results. Support all of your comments with scientific evidence, with appropriate citation of relevant literature, and include these references in a formal References section.

For this assignment, also include your hemoglobin standard curve (either the original or a photocopy) as an Appendix.

Use the data from all groups for haemotocrit, RBC count, total blood haemoglobin, and the associated calculations of MCV, MCH and MCHC. For the blood smear measurements, use just your own group's measurements.

The Excel is the lab results for the groups of students who have done the experiment, we need to discuss the results of all groups not the result of only one group.

The abstract section of the result is (typically less than 200 words), the result section (the result of all groups need to be reorganized in a logical format on Excel spreadsheet to determine the percent increase or decrease compared to the standard results of control, also calculate (mean, SD, standard error of mean) then make the graphs using T-test.

The discussion section is 400- 600 words. Then reference list section.
