ITECH1102 Networking and Security - Work Plan
Objectives:
• Investigate simple cloud file storage
• Investigate the CDMA protocol
Part 1 - Investigate cloud file storage.
Cloud storage services are primarily directed to consumer market. These services provide free or subscription-based access to cloud-based storage and associated services. Products in this category include
• Microsoft OneDrive
• Dropbox
• Google Drive
• Apple's iCloud
Federation University students have access to Microsoft OneDrive. This service gives students and staff to access up to 1TB of cloud-based storage. OneDrive also allows access to online Microsoft Office applications, such as Word, Excel and others. To encourage consumers to use their products, cloud service providers add other services, such as file synchronisation to PCs, Macs, and Android devices.
Today, we will use OneDrive to store files from a Windows platform. We will then access those files from our Linux virtual machine, and then edit those files. Finally, the students will be able to access cloud-based files from their mobile phones.
Task 1 : Create some file for storing in the cloud.
Students who are working from lab machines can access their OneDrive storage from the OneDrive icon in Windows Explorer.
If you are working from a machine without the OneDrive app you can:
• Install and configure OneDrive on your Windows machine OR
• Access OneDrive from a browser
1. To access OneDrive from a Browser do a Google search for OneDrive for Business login.
2. Enter your Fed Uni email address, follow the prompts to authenticate.
3. The OneDrive interface will open, giving you 1 TByte of cloud storage.
4. Create the following three document and save them in the cloud:
o A Microsoft Word document
o A Microsoft Excel document
o A text file created with Notepad
5. Each document should be named week9-lab-xxxxxxx (where xxx is Excel, Word or Notepad). Each file should also include a line of text within the document (e.g., Week 9 lab).
Task 2: Access the file from your Linux Virtual Machine
1. Run Linux Lite.
2. Open a browser and login to OneDrive from the browser. Note that Linux Lite Virtual Machines do not have Excel, Word or Notepad installed. The editing of documents will be done using the Cloud provider's online applications.
3. Open the word document and make a few text and formatting changes.
4. Open the Excel document and do the same.
5. Open the Text document and make some changes.
Part 1 Task (to gain marks)
To gain marks in this lab, demonstrate that you can edit OneDrive Microsoft Office's applications form Linux Lite. Include screenshots to your lab report 2.
Part 2 - Investigate CDMA protocol
Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) is used widely in mobile phone communications systems. The aim of this protocol is to send data from multiple devices as a single transmission unit to better use the radio channel bandwidth. Each mobile device extracts its own data from combined transmission unit. To do this, each user's device is allocated a code that is combined with bits of data to be sent. The CDMA process involves combining many users' data into one transmission unit and the extraction of data on mobile phones. To extract the data, each device uses its unique chipping code that was used to combine the data on the sender side. This process is demonstrated in the following YouTube video, i.e., Please examine it closely. Use the associated spreadsheet to replicate the YouTube video in paper format. This should give you a reasonable understanding of how CDMA works.
Part 2 Task (to gain marks)
To gain marks demonstrate that you have filled the spreadsheet and that you have a reasonable understanding of how CDMA works. Include in Lab Report 2.
