Aim

The aim of the project is to enable you to investigate and critically assess an existing tool design or processand develop ways in which improvements could be made.

Task 1 Selection of tool or process

Consider your own engineering discipline and the typical tools or processes utilised by those involved in the industry. The following are a small selection of tools or processes to get you thinking:

Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing

  • Ratchet socket set
  • Measuring devices
  • Tyre iron/lever
  • Trolley
  • Vice
  • Welder
  • Electrical/Electronics measurement equipment
  • Electrical insulation gloves
  • Blowtorch
  • Pipe freezing kit
  • Pipe cutter
  • Temporary clamping equipment
  • Adhesive delivery gun
  • Flow sensing equipment
  • Soldering iron

Power Tools

  • Drill
  • Plane
  • Saw (circular saw, jigsaw, reciprocating saw, etc)
  • Router
  • Sander
  • Nail gun

Civil Engineering Plant

  • Cranes
  • Transport
  • Concrete pump
  • Backhoe excavators
  • Jackhammer
  • Vibrating probe
  • Paving machine

Process

  • Water treatment
  • Reactor pot process
  • Coating process
  • Protection systems
  • Separation processes
  • Nuclear processes
  • Coating stone with asphalt
  • Cement manufacture
  • Gas liquefaction

In relation to your engineering discipline choose an existing tool or process and state why you have made this choice.

Give a critical evaluation of the various aspects of your chosen tool or process and what aspects of it you consider inadequate.
