Question

During the COVID-19 pandemic, The Ottawa Hospital adapted its care approach for Inuit patients from Nunavut requiring cancer treatment, particularly those undergoing Herceptin therapy for breast cancer. Previously, patients had to travel to Ottawa every three weeks for up to nine months, but travel restrictions made this impractical. To address this, Gwen Barton and her team from the Indigenous Cancer Program devised a solution for patients to receive treatment at Qikiqtani General Hospital in Nunavut. This involved training, policy development, and ensuring drug availability in the region. Virtual training was provided to QGH doctors and nurses by Jennifer Newton from The Ottawa Hospital. The successful administration of the first dose of Herceptin in Nunavut on September 11 highlighted the collaboration's impact on cancer care for Nunavut patients. This partnership has strengthened communication, improved care, and emphasized the shared commitment to addressing the unique needs of Inuit patients, aiming to make healthcare more accessible and effective for this population.
