Introduction:

Brief introduction to the use of anthropometric, biochemical and clinical measures for the assessment of nutritional status.

Outline which aspects your essay will focus on in part A and part B.

Part A:

Provide a critical review of EITHER laboratory or field-based methods of body composition assessment. Laboratory based methods should include densitometry techniques and dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. Field based measures should include bioelectrical impedance analysis, and surface anthropometry (i.e. skinfolds and circumferences).

Your review should consider:

  • Why body composition assessment is needed/what it is used for
  • Lab/field-based measures and concept of direct/indirect and doubly indirect methods
  • Description of the methods and underlying assumptions
  • Critical review of the validity/reliability of the method
  • Consideration of practical strengths/weakness of the technique and applications in specific population groups
  • Brief summary

Part B:

Provide a critical review of EITHER clinical or biochemical assessment method of malnutrition. Clinical assessment should include nutritional assessment tools and physical assessment. Biochemical assessment should include static and functional tests where relevant.

Your review should consider:

  • Brief introduction of malnutrition (prevalence and risk factors)
  • Brief introduction to clinical or biochemical based measures for malnutrition and why clinical or biochemical assessment or a combination is needed
  • Description of the methods and underlying assumptions
  • Critical review of the validity/reliability of the method where possible and/or the effectiveness of the assessment tool
  • Consideration of practical strengths/weakness of the methods/tools and applications in specific population groups
  • Brief summary
