Political analysts have noted that constitutional reform is critical if Caribbean states are to be truly democratic. Already, we have seen where Barbados has become a republic. Trinidad and Guyana have already made significant constitutional changes since its independence.

Instruction:    Referencing the above, choose at least one reform idea or issue that you think the Government of any named Caribbean country should address. Accordingly, select any newspaper article or newsclip (television or radio) analyzing why you think this proposed reform is good for governance in the named country, as well as any disadvantages you think will occur.

Further details are outlined, and the following should be considered in your writing:

• An introduction of the current and controversial topic
• Central and Critical Effort: An analysis of the political issue(s) raised in the article/newsclip. For example, based on your chosen article or news clip, the angle of the article could be a criticism of how the Prime Minister is elected and whether s/he is accountable to the people; or an angle of whether the Constitution reflects human rights standards; increased citizen accountability such as the right to recall; and an analysis of the fusion of powers; the electoral process and the Westminster system of governance, among many other issues.
• Students must explore any concurring or opposing views they have and/or how the political issue may affect the Caribbean populace. Is there any anticipated impact on citizens if Jamaica, for example, becomes a republic? What does this mean for the average Jamaican? Use the information/theories learned in class to analyze this issue.
• An analysis of the positions, motivations and/or objectives of the authors/speakers in the articles or newsclip. For example, what are the viewpoints of others? Is the author/speaker unbiased
• A discussion of how the issues outlined in the article/newsclip affected you as the reader/listener? Did the views impact your political perception of good governance and the political process? Did the author's/speaker's view change or reinforce your own political views on issues of globalization?
