You have been introduced to diagnosis coding this module/week and have seen how complex the process is. Making a coding error can be very costly-from causing an insurance claim to be denied to creating pre-existing conditions for a patient who does not have the diagnosis coded-and, if a practice is audited by a federal regulating body (such as the OIG), can result in fines and even jail time (if the person who coded the service intentionally coded it in error).
