Strategic Plan Part 1: Internal Environmental Analysis Guidance

Step 1: Once again, introduce your target enterprise and explain what business it is in and the environment in which it functions using general terms.

Step 2: Assess the target enterprise's internal environment. Describe the organization's capabilities, i.e. number of employees, overall culture, leadership quality, general operating capability assessment: good, poor, needs improvement, etc.

Step 3:

• Identify the most important strengths and weaknesses of your organization including an assessment of the organization's resources.

• Identify the most important internal environmental factors in the general, industry, and external analysis in relation to the internal analysis.

These instructions are somewhat confusing, so we will examine both within the framework of SWOT analysis: Internal: Strengths, Weaknesses; External: Opportunities, Threats.

Present a graphical chart of SWOT (four quadrants: strengths upper left, opportunities upper right, weaknesses lower left, threats lower right) Discuss each quadrant sufficiently so that a clear understanding is reflected. Discuss opportunities and threats within the context of the target enterprise's internal capabilities.

For example, ABC company has significant opportunity to expand its market share in this specific product area - however, because of a weak innovation infrastructure, strengthening innovation capability will have to occur before the opportunity can be exploited. Conversely, if the enterprise has internal strengths that allow aggressive exploitation of opportunity, explain that as well.

Step 4: Briefly discuss the enterprise's resources, financial, material, and human. Describe them as best you can. Are the enterprise's resources sufficient or insufficient to achieve its goals and objectives.

Step 5: Conduct competitor analysis:

• Identify key competitors, large and small, briefly describe key strength and key weakness

• Identify breadth of competitor product line (or services) compared to target enterprise: similar, competitor more expansive, less expansive

• Identify any upcoming or anticipated shifts by competitors that significantly will change their behavior compared to current and to target enterprise

Step 6: Organizational Structure Assessment

Assess the enterprise's current organizational structure - describe it. Discuss whether it is appropriate given the goals and objectives the enterprise seeks to achieve. If not, discuss changes you recommend.

Step 7: Competitive Position and Possibilities

Compare the competitors identified in Step 5 to your target enterprise in the following categories:

1. 1) Market share

2. 2) Price competitiveness

3. 3) Capacity and productivity

4. 4) Any significant advantages competitor has over target enterprise, any advantages target enterprise has over competitors

5. 5)Prospects for the future (possibilities)

Step 8: Conclusion

Provide conclusion that summarizes your major findings and the implications you believe result from your research.
