Assignment:
As you can see in the course outline, during the first few weeks of the course you will be introduced to a variety of services available at CNC. Furthermore, you will be introduced to a variety of social services in the downtown core of Prince George during a community services tour.
You will do a written submission containing a discussion pertaining to these two events (CNC community panels and the community services tour). Please provide two separate discussions; one concerning the CNC community and one concerning the downtown service community reflect on this topic by providing a comparison of the two communities.
Social Work is focused on the concept of community, by its very name, 'Social' tells us that we assert that all people live in a social world and are dependent on social interaction with others for their very survival. The social group is simultaneously the source of problems and solutions. A 'community' implies that there is a group of people held together by common goals, interests, norms and interactions between members. A community may be geographical, intellectual, ideological, religious, recreational or class-based; to name just a few contexts for collective identity and action. At some fundamental level, a community is designed to meet the needs of its members. There are basic survival needs, safety and structure needs, belonging and love needs, self-esteem and fulfillment needs to borrow form Maslow's need hierarchy.
Please address the following in your discussion:
1. What goals, needs, and norms can be used to explain and describe each of the two communities?
2. What are some of the problems that each of the communities try to address?
3. Construct a mission statement that might explain the fundamental goals, objectives and attitudes of each community.
4. Compare and contrast the two communities in question. What do they have in common? What is unique to each.
