In this assignment, you are considering and comparing the two opposing views of what is happening right now in the business world:
1) Disruption is still going strong, fueled by innovation, technology, and social entrepreneurship.
OR
2) This is the end of disruption; Google, Facebook, Uber, and Amazon (and other similar companies) have now been around long enough to become essentially the new normal, the new status quo, the new oligarchs.
In either choice, you must use (write about, quote from) both Eric Schmidt, and Jonathan Taplin. You can also use examples from what Howard Schultz, Blake Mycoskie, Jeff Bezos, Joe Gebbia, and Elon Musk say (and do) in regard to using technology and social media to serve customers; social entrepreneurship; innovation-based business models; and other avant-garde business ethics and ideas.
Structure:
Par. 1: Introduction: Introduce, define, and explain the concept of ‘disruption'
Give examples from other companies like Uber, Airbnb, Tesla, True & Company, etc.Decide on which viewpoint above you are supporting - disruption is still going on, or disruption has ended.
Par. 2: Eric Schmidt: Explain his position; agree or disagree; quote/cite
Par. 3: Jonathan Taplin: Explain his position; agree or disagree; quote/cite)
Par. 4: Conclude: Write a conclusion that predicts where we go next with disruption; if you think it's over (Taplin), will it arise again in other sectors or industries? If you think it's still going on (Schmidt), when will it end or transition into something else? Finish the conclusion by mentioning the recent former-employee lawsuit against Google (see link below)*.Does this point toward oligarchical behavior?
This story would have been almost unthinkable just a few years ago; the law suit involves perceived job-place harassment based on political ideology, race, and gender (conservative, white, male). It connects to the ‘company culture' concept in that apparently Google has unwritten norms and practices that it expectsemployees to agree with.
